Iran: 'Successful' election in Venezuela indicates democratic process ‘institutionalized’

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman congratulates Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro after his re-election as the Latin American country's president.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman has congratulated Venezuela on the “successful” holding of the presidential election that saw President Nicolas Maduro re-elected, amid “unjust” sanctions imposed on the Latin American country.

In a post on social media platform X on Monday, Nasser Kan'ani congratulated Venezuela's nation, government and president on the “successful holding" of the presidential election.

“This election, which was held despite threats, and cruel and unjust sanctions imposed on Venezuela, and with the wide participation of people and under the supervision of hundreds of international observers from [different] countries, institutions and organizations, indicates the institutionalization of the democratic process in the country.”

Kan'ani reiterated the Islamic Republic’s support for Venezuela in advancing its plants to achieve national development, stressing Tehran’s keenness to strengthen bilateral ties with Caracas.

Elvis Amoroso, president of Venezuela’s CNE electoral body, said the 61-year-old Maduro won 51.2 percent of votes cast Sunday, securing a third six-year term in office.

Amoroso told reporters that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia had obtained only 44.2 percent of votes.

Maduro, a former bus driver who became president following the death of his mentor Hugo Chavez in 2013, was re-elected in 2018 despite the US-orchestrated opposition.

Since November 2019, the US-led sanctions have pushed inflation in Venezuela to above 4,000 percent.

Iran has close ties with several Latin American states, including Venezuela, in different fields and seeks to further deepen those relations.

Iran and Venezuela, both subject to illegal US sanctions, signed a 20-year cooperation deal in June 2022 during a state visit by Maduro to Tehran. The document covered the energy sector, among other areas of cooperation.
