US Secret Service director steps down after Trump assassination attempt

US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle

US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has stepped down amid mounting pressure on her after the recent abortive assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Earlier this month, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, apparently fired on Trump at a Republicans’ campaign rally wounding the upper part of his right ear. One person was killed and two others injured in the shooting.

Following the incident, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle insisted that the Secret Service director was responsible and should resign due to her incompetence.

"In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director," Cheatle wrote in her resignation letter cited by US media on Tuesday, taking "full responsibility for the security lapse" that led to the shooting.

In a TV interview last week, Cheatle said the "buck stopped" with her.

President Joe Biden thanked Cheatle for her service after receiving her resignation letter.

"We all know what happened. That day can never happen again."

Biden said he will appoint the new director of the Secret Service "soon." What date Cheatle will leave office is unclear till now.

However, after the news of Cheatle's resignation came out, Trump tried to shift the blame for the assassination attempt onto the Democratic leadership.

"The Biden/Harris Administration did not properly protect me, and I was forced to take a bullet for Democracy. IT WAS MY GREAT HONOR TO DO SO!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
