Iran: International community must take practical steps to end Israeli aggression, occupation

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani

Iran says the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, must take practical steps to end the Israeli regime's aggression against the people of Palestine and its illegal occupation.

In a statement on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani reacted to the latest opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which he said reflected "deep concern" of the international community about the Israeli regime's acts of violation and crime against the Palestinians.

He added that hundreds of resolutions and international documents have so far asserted the righteousness of the oppressed Palestinian people, emphasizing that the international community must hold the Israeli regime accountable for its criminal acts.

On Friday, the International Court of Justice said “Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful”, adding that the regime “is under an obligation” to end it “as rapidly as possible.”

Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East al-Quds, the areas that Palestinians want for a future independent state, in a 1967 war.

The 83-page advisory opinion read out by court President Nawaf Salam outlined a wide list of policies that it said violated international law, including the building and expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east al-Quds.

Kan'ani once again reiterated Iran's stance on holding a referendum involving all main inhabitants of Palestine, including Muslims, Christians and Jews, as "the most effective solution to end the current illegal situation in occupied Palestine".

"The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the fundamental right to self-determination of the oppressed Palestinian people has been continuously violated over the past years, particularly since the announcement of the existence of the child-killing Israeli regime," the spokesperson said.

He added, "The violation of the Palestinian people's rights is not confined to a specific period of time."

Kan'ani emphasized that Israel continued to violate the Palestinian people's right to determine their own fate through its organized acts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes during the last few months in the Gaza Strip.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime's decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 38,919 Palestinians and injured 89,622 more. Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under rubble.
