Knesset's rejection of Palestinian state shows 'racist' nature of Israel: Iran

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani says a resolution passed by the Israeli parliament (Knesset), which rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state, “once again showed the world the racist nature of the Zionists’ usurping regime”.

“The apartheid regime of Israel is not only a threat to the Palestinian nation, but also a threat to the international peace and security,” he wrote in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.

The spokesman stressed that the Palestinian nation has the right to resist and fight against the occupiers until they restore all their rights, amid the “inaction” of the international community, particularly the United Nations, and its failure to secure their legitimate rights and to enforce international resolutions against Israel.

His remarks came as the Knesset late on Wednesday voted 68-9 to pass a resolution that rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state.

It says the creation of a Palestinian state would pose “an existential danger” to Israel.

Mustafa Barghouti, the secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, condemned the move, saying “This resolution represents a rejection of peace with Palestinians and an official declaration of the death of [the] Oslo agreement.”

The Oslo Accords were first signed between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel in 1993. They called for a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.

In February, the Knesset also rejected the Palestinian statehood, voting in support of a cabinet’s decision to reject the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian State.

However, several countries, including Spain, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia and Armenia, officially recognized a Palestinian state, joining over 140 UN member states that have recognized its statehood over the past four decades.
