Israeli airstrike destroys UN school sheltering displaced Palestinians

An Israeli airstrike has destroyed a UN school building housing displaced Palestinians.

The airstrike hit the school building and smoke was seen rising as people rushed to the scene searching for their children.

"I am imploring the world, from all the nations to have mercy on us, have some compassion for us, to look and stand by us. They need to put pressure on everyone to stop this war and this hostility. What is happening to us is unjust, we cannot bear it, we can't," said one unidentified resident.

Many Palestinians were seeking shelter on Wednesday after fleeing their homes in southern Gaza as Israel pressed on with its military offensive in the densely populated territory.

Israeli forces carried out new strikes in the southern city of Rafah amid fierce fighting with Palestinian militants overnight, residents said.

At least 12 people were killed in new strikes in central and northern Gaza, health officials said.
