Iran’s Constitutional Council has confirmed the results of the June 28 presidential elections, paving the way for the hopefuls to begin campaigning for the July 5 run-off elections

“The validity of the first round of the presidential election has been approved by the Constitutional Council,” spokesman Hadi Tahan Nazif said on Sunday.

Nazif explained that no complaints were submitted to the Constitutional Council by any of the candidates.

“Campaigning for the second round of elections will start after the announcement of the validity of the elections and will continue until 24 hours before the voting,” he added.

More than 24 million people cast their votes in Friday’s election to replace Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi, who lost his life in a helicopter crash on May 19.

None of the candidates secured the necessary votes to win the race. The top two vote-getters, Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili, subsequently advanced to the runoff on July 5.
