Mobile phone imports into Iran drops 27% y/y in June quarter

Mobile phone imports into Iran dropped by 27% in volume terms year on year in the quarter to late June.

Iran’s customs data show mobile phone imports into the country dropped by 27% in volume terms year on year in the quarter to June 20.

President of Iran’s customs administration said on Sunday that importers and passengers had imported nearly 2.05 million mobile phone units into Iran in the three months to late June.

“The value of this number of imported mobile phones reached $527.509 million,” said Mohammad Rezvani Far, adding that the figure of a decline of 8% compared to June quarter of 2023.

Mobile phones imported by passengers accounted for nearly 100,000 units or just 5% of total phones imported into Iran in the June quarter, said Rezvani Far.

The decline in phone imports into Iran comes more than a year after the country tightened restrictions on the use of new models of phones manufactured by the US company Apple Inc.

Owners of new models of Apple phones, including 14 and 15 series iPhones, have not been able to register their devices in the Iranian mobile network since February 2023.

Iran also maintains restrictions on the imports of luxury mobile phones to control hard currency spending and to better cope with the impacts of sanctions affecting its financial resources.

However, the policy has hardly affected the access of Iranians to modern internet services.

Iran’s telecoms ministry said last week that the capacity of the country’s broadband internet, which is mostly used by mobile phone owners, had nearly doubled in the past three years.

International internet speed monitoring websites have also reported a 20% average increase in the speed of mobile and fixed internet services in Iran in the past five months.
