Iran rejects US claims, backs resolution of Yemen crisis via diplomatic channels: UN envoy

Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations

Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations has dismissed a recent US accusation regarding Yemen, stressing that the Islamic Republic has invariably been espousing a peaceful solution to the long-standing crisis in Yemen through diplomatic channels.

Amir Saeid Iravani made the statement in separate letters to the UN secretary general and the president of the Security Council on Wednesday as he outlined Iran’s stance on the ongoing situation in war-torn Yemen and responded to US allegations about the Islamic Republic’s aid to the Yemeni armed forces in their anti-Israel maritime operations.

Robert Wood, the US representative at the UN, claimed during the open session of the Security Council on June 13 that Iran “continues to directly support” the Yemeni forces in the Red Sea region and accused Tehran of “brazen violations of the arms embargo” on the Arab country.

It is regrettable that “the US representative, as is the US’ typical behavior, abused the Security Council platform to accuse other sovereign states. The Islamic Republic of Iran unequivocally rejects these unfounded allegations,” Iravani wrote in his letters.

“On numerous occasions, Iran has made it clear that it is committed to the Security Council's relevant resolutions on the situation in Yemen and has not been engaged in activities in contravention of these resolutions. Instead, Iran consistently advocates for the peaceful resolution of the Yemen crisis through diplomatic channels and underscores its dedication to maritime security and freedom of navigation,” he added.

The Iranian envoy censured Washington and its coalition partners for perpetrating acts of aggression against Yemen's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“The United States and its coalition partners have committed and continue to commit acts of aggression against Yemen's sovereignty and territorial integrity, blatantly violating international law, the UN Charter, and pertinent Security Council resolutions,” Iravani said.

“These egregious violations jeopardize regional peace and stability and obstruct efforts toward achieving a peaceful resolution in Yemen, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis gripping the nation."

Underlining that the United States is fully responsible for such egregious violations, the Iranian envoy said, "It cannot deny its responsibility. Therefore, using failed tactics and spreading lies and misinformation campaigns about the situation in Yemen cannot justify or legitimize the United States' aggression against Yemen's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on the Gaza Strip on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

Yemeni Armed Forces have said that they won’t stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza end.

Israel has killed at least 37,396 people and wounded over 85,523 in Gaza since October.

The leader of the Ansarullah resistance movement, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, has said it is “a great honor and blessing to be confronting America directly.”

The attacks have forced some of the world’s biggest shipping and oil companies to suspend transit through one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. Tankers are instead adding thousands of miles to international shipping routes by sailing around the continent of Africa rather than going through the Suez Canal.
