Aftermath of ANC loss in South Africa's general elections

The African National Congress (ANC), the party of Nelson Mandela, which was elected amid jubilation and hope in 1994, has lost its majority in South Africa's parliament after 30 years at the helm. ANC secured 159 out of 400 seats in the National Assembly in the country's 2024 general elections.

More than 27 million South Africans took part in national and provincial elections on May 29 to elect a new National Assembly and provincial legislatures. In the end, no party won an outright majority in the National Assembly. The ANC needed 200 seats to maintain its 30-year-old unchallenged dominance in the parliament.

In this episode of the program, we will look into factors behind this loss and what the future holds.
