Interim Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani says Iran and Russia should strengthen strategic coordination on the developments in the Caucasus region.

Bagheri Kani made the comments in a meeting in Tehran on Sunday with Igor Khovaev, the Special Representative of Foreign Minister of Russia on the issues of supporting the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

He said Tehran and Moscow should hold constant consultations given the importance and sensitivity of the ongoing developments in the Caucasus and increasing foreign interference in regional affairs.

He added that the two sides have common stance and interests on leading regional and international issues, including the Caucasus.

The top Iranian diplomat reiterated the country's principled stance on the importance of settling issues in the region through peaceful channels.

It is important to make maximum use of the capacity of regional mechanisms such as the 3+3 cooperation format in order to resolve regional issues, Bagheri Kani said.

He also called for expanding regional cooperation and convergence and ensuring security, stability and collective interests of the countries in the Caucasus region.

The 3+3 format features the three South Caucasus countries of Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan plus Russia, Turkey, and Iran.

It was created in 2020 to promote peace and development in South Caucasus and resolve outstanding issues such as the status of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

For his part, Khovaev outlined Russia's diplomatic efforts to establish peace in Caucasus and said Tehran and Moscow have a common strategic stance on the developments in the region.

He added that the Iranian and Russian authorities should increase interaction and hold close and constant consultations to counter foreign interference.
