Ukraine has fired drones inside southern Russia after obtaining NATO's go-ahead.

Russia's North Ossetia region was targeted with Ukrainian drones for the first time ever on Saturday.

Russian officials said three drones aiming for a military airfield near the town of Mozdokwere were shot down in the attack.

“The attack was foiled by the Russian defense ministry’s air defense forces. Minor damage and fires were recorded. No one was injured,” North Ossetia governor Sergei Menyailo said.

Menyailo added, “All services have been put on high alert. For the safety of citizens, we have decided to cancel all mass events in Mozdoksky district.”

Till last month, US-led Western suppliers of arms and ammo to Ukraine wanted Kiev not to use the weaponry to strike targets inside Russia and Kiev's attempts to hit targets on Russian territory were indiscreet.

However, US President Joe Biden gave Kiev permission to fire long-range missiles supplied by the Americans at targets inside Russia.

On Friday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reiterated during a visit to new member Sweden that Ukraine had the military alliance's go-ahead to strike targets inside Russia. "There is no question that Ukraine has the right to hit targets on Russian territory."

Stoltenberg claimed international law gave Ukraine the permission to attack military targets inside Russia to defend itself.

"Ukraine has the right to self defense," he told a news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at a military base near Stockholm.

The Kremlin said this week that Western nations supplying Ukraine with weapons to strike Russian territory will have to face Russia’s response.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Moscow could "act the same way" as the Western alliance by arming the West's enemies and inciting them to fight.

Moscow launched its special military operation in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region in 2022 to stop NATO’s eastward expansion after warning that the US-led military alliance was pursuing an “aggressive line” against Russia.

Western nations responded by slapping economic sanction on Russia and flooding Ukrainian forces with huge shipments of weapons and ammunition to fight Russian troops.

Russia has repeatedly warned the US-led NATO alliance a continued supply of Western arms and military equipment for the Ukrainian military would only prolong the war, wasting more lives and resources.
