Israel arrests Palestinian reporter amid regime's crackdown on journalists
Israeli forces have arrested a Palestinian journalist from the occupied West Bank city of Nablus, after she was summoned for interrogation by the regime’s security officials.
According to Palestinian media outlets, Rasha Hirzallah, who works for Palestinian WAFA news agency, was interrogated at a detention center in the Israeli settlement of Ariel near the city of Ramallah before being detained.
Hirzallah’s family said Israeli security officials summoned the journalist, who upon her arrival was told that she would remain under arrest for 72 hours, without giving any reasons or leveling any charges.
Hirzallah is sister of the slain member of Lions’ Den resistance group, Muhammad Hirzallah.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has slammed detention of Hirzallah as part of Israel’s increased crackdown on and targeting of journalists.
It called on the international organizations to shoulder their responsibilities and stop continuation of Israel’s crimes against Palestinian journalists, including their detentions and killings.
Other official Palestinian media have also condemned the regime’s move in a joint statement.
They said the regime’s arrest campaign against journalists will not deter them from carrying out their duty toward the Palestinian people and their just cause, and they will continue to expose the crimes of the occupying regime.
The statement stressed that the detention of Hirzallah is part of Israel’s targeting of Palestinian media and their crew members.
The Israeli regime has intensified its clampdown on journalists, especially Palestinians reporters, since it started its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip early last October.
So far, 148 journalists have been killed by the regime’s forces since October 7, 2023, while dozens of others are still languishing in Israeli jails.
