Iranian sportsmen and women have featured commendable performances at the fifth edition of West Asian Athletics Championships in Iraq, and have been crowned at the regional tournament.
The Iranians claimed the title at the conclusion of the sports event at Basra Sports City Stadium in the southern Iraqi port city of Basra on Saturday, with a tally of 40 medals, including 21 gold ones, 16 silvers, and three bronzes.
Female Iranian athletes outperformed their compatriot sportsmen, securing 17 gold, 12 silver, and 2 bronze medals. Iranian sportsmen could earn four gold, four silver, and one bronze medals.
Iraq and Qatar could claim the second and third spots with 39 and 12 medals respectively.
Alongside the host country, Iraq, a dozen other countries — Bahrain, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen — participated in 48 competitions of the tournament.
The fifth edition of West Asian Athletics Championship kicked off in Basra, Iraq, on May 29 and ran through June 1, 2024.
