The Ukrainian president has admitted that his country will lose the ongoing war against Russia if the United States Congress does not approve a major military aid package.

Volodymyr Zelensky’s Sunday remarks were made in a nightly video address after Ukraine’s military acknowledged that the fighting around the frontline city of Chasiv Yar was "difficult" and "tense," as Russian forces continued to mount pressure on the city.

Chasiv Yar is less than 30 kilometres (18 miles) from Kramatorsk, an important rail and logistics hub for the Ukrainian army.

"It is necessary to specifically tell Congress that if Congress does not help Ukraine, Ukraine will lose the war," Zelensky said.

Stressing that it would be difficult for Ukraine to survive without the United States’ military aid, Zelensky claimed, "If Ukraine loses the war, other states will be attacked."

His latest comments came after Zelensky complained in a Saturday interview that his forces were short of needed munitions to fight against Russian troops, appealing to Kiev's Western allies to rush in more missiles.

Zelensky, in particular, singled out the urgent need for Patriot air defense systems, saying that Ukraine needed 25 of them.

He reiterated that Ukraine could run out of air defense missiles if Russian forces pressed ahead with their special military operation.

Since Russia launched its special operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Zelensky has been appealing to Kiev's Western allies to provide more arms and ammunition, particularly long-range missiles, fighter jets, and air defense systems.

Ukraine has also made increasingly urgent calls for the United States to start sending a proposed $60 billion aid package that has been blocked by Republicans in Congress for months.

During the Saturday interview, Zelensky said he still believed that the major US aid package would be approved by Congress.
