France’s support for Ukraine could go beyond arms supplies: Army chief

A senior French army general says Russia should not expect the West to limit its support for Ukraine to arms supplies only.

“We have to show him that he will not be able to use this logic to go all the way, because this idea is not right.”

General Thierry Burkhard, the chief of staff of France’s armed forces, said on Thursday in comments about President Vladimir Putin of Russia and its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The French army chief said the war in Ukraine “will end when Russia stops attacking.”

“The war in Ukraine concerns us because we are involved in its consequences. Europeans must therefore be capable of taking risks to ensure the security of Europe in the decade to come.”

French President Emmanuel Macron has also said France “would be ready to make sure that Russia never wins that war.”

General Burkhard said Macron’s “intention is to make Vladimir Putin understand that we are aware of what is at stake in Ukraine.”

Earlier this month, Macron said there are "no limits" to French support for Ukraine.

Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev reacted to his remarks, saying that Moscow “has no more red lines left for France."

Macron’s comments also raised concerns at home, with French political leaders describing his position as “irresponsible and extremely dangerous for the peace of the world."

The French head of state has recently refused to rule out sending ground troops to Ukraine.
