Thousands of Muslims rallied outside the US Embassy in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Saturday to call for a ceasefire in Gaza ahead of the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

More than 3,000 protesters, mostly wearing traditional Palestinian scarves, marched to a major street outside the embassy which was under heavy police guard, carrying Palestinian flags and banners.

They halted traffic along the way as they chanted “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is Great,” and “Save Palestinians.”

The demonstration was organized by more than a dozen Islamic groups, which denounced US support for Israel and demanded the US push Israel to open more aid routes into Gaza as hunger worsens.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel and there is no Israeli embassy in the country.
