Split in ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is facing an unprecedented challenge.

On January 27, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger announced their plan to withdraw from membership of ECOWAS after reconciliation efforts failed. The three military-led West African nations have accused ECOWAS of becoming a threat to its members.

Former colonial powers France, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States have sided with ECOWAS and this has angered the three Sahel countries. ECOWAS has called on Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali to reconsider their decision to quit the political and economic alliance, warning of the hardships the move would force on their citizens.

Meanwhile, the Italian government unveiled details of a plan for what it says is a new era of partnership with African nations.

During a recent summit attended by at least 20 African leaders in Rome, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni appeared eager to establish a hub to distribute African energy, gas in particular, to the rest of Europe.

Will Africa really benefit from this plan or is it a more upgraded plan to continue looting Africa's resources?
