When the Islamic Revolution ousted Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi in 1979, Iran's new rulers handed over the keys of the Israeli embassy in Tehran to Palestinian officials.

That symbolic gesture marked a shift in the country's foreign policy because under the new government in Iran, Israel was an occupying force, not a state, and Palestinian statehood was a given.
