ICJ ruling in Israel genocide case could implicate US in war crimes: Analysis

A new analysis has revealed that the interim ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against the Israeli regime over the Gaza genocide can implicate the United States in the war crimes being committed against the Palestinians in the besieged territory.

In an analysis published on Sunday, The Guardian described the ICJ ruling as “embarrassing” to US President Joe Biden who has unconditionally supported the Israeli regime since the start of its war on Gaza in early October, adding that it not only exposes Washington to international condemnation, but also to possible complicity in war crimes.

The Guardian further noted that the ruling is an incentive for Israel’s Western backers—particularly the US and UK—to finally push for a ceasefire and to pressure Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet to rein in its brutal war and bombardment of Gaza, given that they will presumably want to avoid being implicated in supporting genocide in international forums.

On Friday, ICJ called on Israel to prevent genocidal acts in its ongoing war in Gaza but stopped short of ordering a ceasefire.

The order by the UN top court was part of its interim ruling on the emergency measures requested by South Africa in its genocide case against Israel over its war on the Gaza Strip.

The Hague-based court said Israel must do everything to “prevent the commission of all acts within the scope” of the 1948 UN Genocide Convention while refraining from ordering an immediate halt to the almost four-month-old war.

Later in the day, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the rulings issued by ICJ are “binding.”

The Israeli regime waged the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas carried out the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime’s atrocities against Palestinians.

Since the start of the aggression, Israel has killed more than 26,400 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

The US, Israel's biggest and oldest ally, has backed Tel Aviv's ferocious attacks on the Palestinian territory as an instance of "self-defense," and has provided the regime with thousands of arms consignments since the onset of the war.

Washington has also been casting its veto against the United Nations Security Council's resolutions that would call on the occupying regime to cease its aggression.
