The resistance forces became more and more popular in Iraq as they showed bravery and honesty in their fight against Daesh terrorists. They managed to drive the terrorists out of Mosul, the city wherein Daesh declared its so-called caliphate. With the popularity of the resistance movement supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran on the rise, the Americans began putting more pressure on Baghdad to tell the Iranians leave Iraqi soil. Much to the dismay of the Americans, the 2018 election in Iraq was concluded with a landslide victory for factions somehow affiliated to the Iranians - including the Popular Mobilization Forces. As Donald Trump came to power in the US, the White House ratcheted up its pressure on Baghdad. Their intensifying pressures finally resulted in the resignation of Adil Abdul-Mahdi, the Iraqi Prime Minister of the time, who had strong ties with Tehran.
