A senior United Nations official said on Thursday during a press briefing at UN headquarters in New York City that "half of the population are starving" in Gaza.
"The grim reality is also that nine out of ten people are not eating enough, are not eating every day, and don't know where their next meal is going to come from," said Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), who visited Gaza over the weekend.
Skau said the WFP was able to deliver food during the seven-day pause, but "that has not been possible since the fighting resumed."
He called for a humanitarian ceasefire and said the WFP was "ready to deliver to another million people within a couple of weeks should the conditions allow."
The Gaza health ministry said on Thursday that Israel's genocide in the blockaded territory, which started on October 7, has so far killed over 18,787people and wounded 51,000 others.
