Iran diplomacy

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman says Tehran is against any geopolitical change in south Caucasus region. Naser Kan’ani said in his weekly presser that Tehran supports the expansion of transit routes and networks in the region in line with regional interests. That was a reference to Turkey’s proposals for a new regional road link. Kan’ani also called for the differences including those between Baku and Yerevan to be resolved through regional frameworks. The spokesman said Tehran is against foreign intervention and presence in the Caucasus. He added that Tehran supports the proposals for a framework of dialogue among the three South Caucasus countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia and the neighboring countries of Iran, Russia, and Turkey. The format aims to address security issues and promote economic and transport ties.

Anti-NATO protest

In the US, New Yorkers have taken to the streets to show their anger at NATO and their country’s military and financial support for Ukraine. The protestors urged their government to spend on crucial sectors like education and housing instead of financing the war in Ukraine. They also blamed the US and NATO for the conflict in the East European country. Since 2022, Washington has provided over $75bn in aid to Kiev to help it in the war with Russia. The US’s NATO allies, especially the European countries, have also sent billions of dollars worth of military aid to Ukraine. This has sparked protests in those countries, as well. Russia has repeatedly condemned the West’s support for Ukraine, saying that it will further prolong the conflict.

Catalans independence rally

Thousands of people flock to the streets of Catalonia’s capital to mark the sixth anniversary of the failed independence referendum of 2017. The pro-independence demonstrators waved Catalonia’s flags and chanted anti-Spain slogans as they marched through the streets of Barcelona. Spain’s flag was also set on fire during the rally as protestors called for Catalonia’s independence. Back in 2017, a referendum, held on the region's independence, was declared unconstitutional by the central government in Madrid. The move also led to the arrest and ouster of more than 20 Catalan leaders.
