Pakistan bomb blast

An explosion in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan has killed at least 52 people. The blast took place near a mosque in Mastung city as people were gathering to celebrate the birthday anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad. More than 80 people were injured too. Some are in critical condition. Local officials say the attack was a suicide blast. Pakistan’s interior ministry has confirmed the explosion, blaming it on terrorist elements. No group has yet claimed responsibility. The death toll is expected to rise.

Russia-Ukraine war

Officials in Russia’s Kursk region say a Ukrainian drone strike has hit a substation in a border village, cutting off power to some areas. The Kursk regional governor says a drone dropped two explosives on the substation. As a result, a transformer caught fire and a hospital plus five settlements were cut off from power supply. A total of ten drones were downed over Kursk at night. That’s according to the Russian defense ministry. It says two drones were also downed over the neighboring border region, Belgorod. And, another one was thwarted over Kaluga, western Russia. Ukraine has stepped up its drone attacks on Russia since June. Russia says it has repelled most of the attacks, downplaying their significance.

US govt. shutdown looms

A government shutdown looms in the US as the Democratic-led Senate and the House, controlled by Republicans, remain at loggerheads on plans to fund federal agencies. The Senate is pushing for a stopgap funding bill that would extend federal spending until November 17. But, House Republicans are opposed to a short-term funding expansion. They also want deep spending cuts. The House Republicans have already passed several bills to fund parts of the government. That, however, would not stop a shutdown, because there’s no hope the bills would pass in the Senate. Government funding in the US ends early Sunday. If Congress fails to come up with a clear plan, federal agencies will run out of money. That would affect hundreds of thousands of workers, halting a wide range of services.
