Saudi stance on Palestine issue

A Saudi delegation has paid a rare visit to the Occupied West Bank, meeting with senior Palestinian officials there. The team is led by non-resident Saudi ambassador to the Palestinian territories, Nayef al-Sudairi. This is Saudi Arabia's first delegation visiting the West Bank in three decades. Sudairi has presented his credentials to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki in Ramallah. The Saudi delegation stressed the importance of the Palestine issue for the kingdom. Concurrently, Israel's tourism minister has traveled to Saudi Arabia for a UN conference. This is the first public trip to the country by an Israeli cabinet member. The visit comes amid speculations about the possibility of normalizing ties between Tel Aviv and Riyadh.

US tanks in Ukraine

The Kremlin says US-made Abrams tanks supplied to Kiev cannot change the outcome of its military operations in Ukraine. They would burn like the rest of US arms given to Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says there’s no single weapon that can change the balance of power on the battlefield. This, after Kiev said it had received deliveries of the US-made tanks. Ukraine has been asking for more Western weapons, including longer-range missiles. It says such weapons allow it to break through Russian positions and launch strikes deep within Russian-controlled territories. According to US officials, the tanks are armed with depleted uranium rounds. This is part of a 43-billion dollar military assistance pledge by Washington. Moscow has constantly warned that the West's arms deliveries to Kiev would only prolong the war.

France Muslim hijab ban

The United Nations has criticized France's plan to bar Olympic athletes from wearing the Muslim hijab during the 2024 Paris Games. The UN rights office spokeswoman, Marta Hurtado, says the international body is firmly opposed to such "discriminatory practices". She also warned that the measures could have harmful consequences. The French sports minister has announced that the country's athletes would be barred from wearing headscarves during the Games. France has already prohibited the wearing of religious symbols deemed ostentatious in some contexts, such as in state schools and by civil servants. Back in June, France's Council of State upheld a ban on women footballers wearing the hijab.
