An explosion at an illegal firecracker factory unit killed at least five people in the North 24 Pargana district of India's eastern state West Bengal on Sunday (August 27), local media reports said.

The building housing the firecracker factory collapsed, and badly burned victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to reports.

The reason for the explosion is still unknown to the police.

A search operation is underway to look for more victims.

Industrial accidents are common in India.

They are often blamed on people flouting safety norms and lax inspection by government officials.
