Iran-Saudi diplomacy

Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the city of Jeddah. Amir-Abdollahian says the talks were frank, fruitful and based on good neighborly relations. The top Iranian diplomat said the need for sustainable bilateral relations in all fields was stressed. He added that Tehran and Riyadh both agree on “security and development for all” in the region. Bin Salman, meanwhile, described Saudi relations with Iran as strategic, stressing that Riyadh is seriously determined in this regard. The meeting took place a day after the Iranian foreign minister held talks with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan in the capital Riyadh. In a joint presser after the talks, the two officials hailed steps by their countries to restore and enhance bilateral ties.

Coup in Niger

Military chiefs of West Africa's main regional bloc have agreed on a date for possible military intervention in the coup-hit Niger. The defense chiefs of the 15-member ECOWAS say they are ready to act whenever an order is given. The alliance is also warning that it would not engage in endless dialogue with Niger’s junta. This is while the bloc says it prefers a peaceful solution and that military action would be the last option. Niger has been in turmoil since late July, when military officers deposed President Mohamed Bazoum. They’ve so far defied calls from the UN, ECOWAS and the West to return power to the president.

Trilateral summit

The US, Japan and South Korea announce a security pledge to consult each other in moments of crisis as Washington seeks to counter Beijing’s growing influence. Biden made the remarks during a press conference after meeting with his South Korean counterpart and Japanese prime minister at Camp David presidential retreat in the US. The South Korean and Japanese leaders also expressed their commitments to working together on various fields including technology. Meanwhile, China has already slammed any kind of what it called bloc confrontation in the Indo-Pacific region.
