Egypt’s highest Islamic authority, Al-Azhar, has called on freedom-seeking nations to boycott products from Sweden and Denmark to protest recent desecration of the Holy Qur’an in the two Nordic countries.

Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayeb made the request in a statement released on Monday, in response to a letter sent earlier by the head of Iran’s Seminary Alireza Arafi.

“Al-Azhar urged all Arab and Muslim nations to keep boycotting Swedish and Danish goods in support of God and the Holy Qur’an. It also asked all freedom-seeking people of the world to join the campaign,” the statement read.

It also noted that “any failure to take a decisive position” on the desecrations of the Muslim holy book is tantamount to supporting and encouraging such crimes.

Sweden and Denmark have come under pressure in recent weeks, after authorities gave permission for blasphemous burning of the Qur’an in their capitals.

Al-Azhar expressed hope that such “inhumane and uncivilized” incidents will unite Muslims across the globe against the challenges posed to their security and sanctities.

The Egyptian Islamic authority further emphasized that “it will deal with anyone, who attempts to insult Muslims and their sanctities, and that it bears responsibility to support religion and confront insults to it.”

Al-Azhar also vowed to spare no efforts to defend its achievements in promoting peace, tolerance and brotherhood, as well as an intra-religious dialog.

Additionally, it voiced its resolve to advance dialog between religious scholars in a bid to strengthen unity among them.

In his letter to Tayeb, Arafi had hailed Al-Azhar’s stance on the recent sacrilegious acts.

He also called for a boycott of goods from the countries, where the Qur’an was desecrated, and a revision of relations with them.

International bodies and Islamic governments should devise an international law in order to prevent similar Qur’an desecrations, Arafi added.
