Biden on ‘suicidal’ course in Ukraine, may 'stupidly' drag US to World War 3: Oliver Stone

US President Joe Biden is on a ‘suicidal’ course in Ukraine and may "stupidly" drag the country into World War III, says award-winning American director and filmmaker, Oliver Stone, slamming continued anti-Russia attitude of the Washington establishment and its NATO allies as well as what he referred to as the "American propaganda machine."

Blasting persisting Cold-War-era anti-Russia mindset held by US neoconservative policy makers, Stone emphasized in an interview: “Unless we change our direction, our thinking, we’re taking Russia into the edge... This is crazy what’s going on; it’s nuts, it’s suicidal; we’re gonna hurt ourselves in a big way. This is a potential World War III.”

Speaking on an episode of British commentator Russell Brand’s Stay Free podcast released on Friday, Stone -- internationally known for his documentary, Ukraine on Fire, highlighting the major role US played in the 2014 coup in the country -- further underlined that Biden is “stupidly dragging the US  into a confrontation” with Russia.

“It seems that he’s dragging us stupidly into a confrontation with a power that is not going to give," Stone added, pointing out: "This is [Russia’s] borders. This is their world. This is NATO going into Ukraine. This is a whole other story.”

“Biden is an old Cold Warrior, and he really hates the old Soviet Union which he confounds again with the Russian Federation, which is not communist,” Stone went on to explain, further describing the ailing US president as “a man who maybe is not in charge of his own administration.”

Stone further blamed the conflict in Ukraine on the “neoconservative movement who started the war in Iraq,” and who still occupy prominent positions in the Biden’s administration.

Stone also explained the history of the very hawkish attitude of US policy makers towards Moscow and their failure to distinguish former Soviet Union and the present-day Russia, further lashing out at mainstream US media outlets for fanning the anti-Russia flame.

“Putin is not the monster pictured by the American propaganda machine,” he emphasized, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, while recalling his remarks years earlier describing the US as “our partner” as well as his repeated willingness to cooperate with Washington in various fields.

He further stressed that the US has alienated China as well, calling such approach as an “unfortunate tragedy” and noting that Washington has chosen to compete with other powers instead of cooperating with them in fields such as clean nuclear energy.

“We’re making things far worse,” he emphasized.

Stone’s 2016 documentary Ukraine on Fire, is sharply critical of NATO’s eastward expansion and details the ousting of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych in a “coup d'état” aided by the US in 2014.

The documentary also criticizes the US’ sponsorship of Ukrainian neo-Nazis, and the war on Donetsk and Lugansk waged by Yanukovich’s US-backed successor, Pyotr Poroshenko.

Among Stone’s prominent critical films and documentaries are Platoon, JFK and Snowden. His new documentary, called Nuclear Now, attempts to show why nuclear power is the future to unlock energy for years to come.
