Iran joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a full member on July 4th, with Tehran having intensified its diplomatic efforts with friends and adversaries in recent months, seeking to improve its economy, project strength, and reduce the impact of Western sanctions.

In this regard, while addressing the opening ceremony of the virtual summit, the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping emphasized Beijing's strategic position by urging the leaders of Russia, Iran, and other allies to boost ties and resist Western sanctions.

In his turn, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi characterized the Islamic Republic’s membership as a foreign policy achievement in the face of Western blocs' attempts to isolate Iran and noted that Islamic Republic’s membership will support "collective regional security, while expanding ties and communications and strengthening unity among member states"
