Russia says it has intercepted two missiles that targeted the Crimean Peninsula, which rejoined the Russian Federation in a 2014 referendum, and the southern Rostov region with its air defense systems.
The governor in Crimea, Sergei Aksyonove confirmed the missile attack on his Telegram account, reporting that a cruise missile was shot down near the Kerch Bridge which links the peninsula to Russia.
Aksyonove said the interception of the missile did not cause any damage or casualties, stopping short of providing further details about the type or the origin of the missile.
Meanwhile, local officials said that traffic movement on the Crimean Bridge had been restored which temporary was suspended due to the attack.
In the nearby Russian region of Rostov, authorities also reported the shooting down of a missile, with the region’s governor Vasily Golubev writing on Telegram that the missile was Ukrainian.
"There were no casualties. The debris partially damaged the roofs of several buildings," Golubev added.
The peninsula, which joined the Russian Federation following a 2014 referendum overwhelmingly favoring the move, is home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and has been struck by a series of drone attacks since Moscow launched its “special military operation” in Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia launched the campiagn as a security measure against NATO’s further eastern expansion and to also stop Kiev’s persecution of the pro-Russian population in eastern Ukraine.
Moscow regularly accuses Ukraine of attacks against targets inside Russia, while Kiev has never openly taken responsibility for these attacks.
