Belgium says ready for deeper Iran-Europe ties, hails prisoner release

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian (R) and his Belgian counterpart, Hadja Lahbib, meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York on September 23, 2022.

Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib says her country is ready to foster closer ties between Iran and Europe, expressing her gratitude for Tehran’s assistance in resolving the issue of European prisoners' release.

In a phone conversation with her Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Saturday, Lahbib commended Iran's humanitarian move to release one Dane and two Austrian-Iranian citizens and hoped it would open a new chapter in relations between Tehran and Brussels.

Secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights and the Judiciary chief’s deputy for international affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said on Friday the country freed the three prisoners on humanitarian grounds.

He identified the two Iranian nationals as Masoud Mosaheb and Kamran Ghaderi, who had served most of their terms, 4.5 and 7.5 years, respectively. The Judiciary official did not name the Danish individual.

They were released few days after Assadollah Assadi, an Iranian diplomat detained in Belgium on false terror-related charges, was freed following an Omani-brokered deal.

Pointing to Iran's rich history and civilization, the Belgian minister expressed hope to travel to Tehran at an appropriate time.

Iran expects effective talks with Europe: Amir-Abdollahian

During the phone call, Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran expects "purposeful and effective" dialogue based on mutual respect would be put on the agenda of Iran and the European sides given Belgium's role in the European Union.

The top Iranian diplomat also hailed joint efforts by Iran and Belgium which resulted in the release of the two countries' inmates.
