Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among young Americans with ages between 10 and 24 in the United States.
It is also the leading cause of death for American teens of 13 to 14 years of age.
Suicide rates more than doubled for 13- and 14-year-old children from 2008 to 2018. Suicide rates had declined in the age group the previous decade, and the significant difference between the two decades was the rise of social media in the more recent period.
The CDC reports that from 2011 to 2021 suicidality increased among US high school students, especially among people of color.
