US politician Andrew Yang says there’s a ‘faux democracy’ in America

US politician Andrew Yang has slammed the political system in the United States, saying it is a “faux democracy.”

“Our lives can just sink in the mud, it doesn’t matter in this political system, and so you have this essentially faux democracy at this point,” Yang, former Democratic presidential candidate and now the co-chair of the Forward Party, said in an interview on Tuesday.

“And that’s what we have to shake up and change,” he added. “The only way we’re going to see a human-centered economy or any of our problems get solved is if we recreate a genuine democracy in this country.”

Yang said that the current primary system in the United States only allows for a small percentage of people to choose the candidates for president.

He added if the general public votes on who should not be the nominee for president, Joe Biden nor would Donald Trump make it to the primaries in 2024.

“You have a sliver of the population controlling who the nominees are. And they’re not ideologically in tune with the average American,” he said. “It’s distorting everything. It’s one reason why Trump is trampling the field over there.”

“If you submitted it to the general American public and said, ‘Who should be the nominees,’ you wouldn’t get Biden versus Trump.”

Last week, President Biden, 80, announced his 2024 reelection campaign setting the scene for a rematch against his Republican predecessor Trump, who will be 77 next year.

Already Biden is the oldest president in US history and he would be 86 by the end of his second term if he were to win reelection in 2024.

Biden insisted he needed a second term in office to garner enough time to realize his vows and restore the United States to its full character.

However, a majority of Americans say they do not want Biden, nor Trump to run for president in 2024.

Last week, an NBC News poll found that 60 percent of Americans think Trump should not run for president again— including roughly a third of Republicans. Thirty percent of those opposed to his 2024 run cite the criminal charges he faces in New York as “a major reason.”

Meanwhile, the survey showed that 70 percent of Americans believe that Biden should not campaign for a second term either, including 51 percent of Democrats.

Almost half of those who were against Biden running again cited his age as a significant factor. Trump is 76 years old.

In the meantime, no prominent Democratic challenger is expected to emerge against Biden. So far, Marianne Williamson, 70, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., 69, have been the only names reported in this regard.
