US economy

US Consumer confidence has dipped again in April as anxiety over a slowing economy and possible recession weighed on American households. It’s the third time in four months that the overall index has declined, and remains below 2022’s average. Consumer spending makes up about 70% of US economic activity. The decline partly stems from the Federal Reserve raising interest rates, in its effort to bring down four-decade high inflation. Polls show that more Americans have cancelled their purchasing plans in April. Economists say fewer households expect business conditions to improve and more expect worsening of conditions in the next six months.

Talks on Syria security

The defense ministers and intelligence chiefs of Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Syria hold a meeting in Moscow.  Ankara and Moscow described the meeting as constructive, adding that all four sides showed their desire to strengthen security in Syria. The ministers also reaffirmed the need to intensify efforts for the speedy return of Syrian refugees to their homeland. The process for normalizing relations between Ankara and Damascus, which kicked off in December last year, was also on the agenda. Meanwhile, the Syrian Defense Ministry said there were also discussions on the withdrawal of Turkish troops from Syria, as well as opening the strategic M4 highway that paves the way for the revival of Syria's trade with neighboring countries.

Sudan conflict

The UN refugee agency warns of further displacement of people from Sudan. The UN organ says at least twenty-thousand Sudanese have fled into Chad since the start of clashes between the army and a major paramilitary group ten days ago. It says some four-thousand South Sudanese refugees have also returned to their home country. The UN officials says the figures could rise and it’s scaling up its operations in the African country.
