The UN is reviewing its presence in Afghanistan after women were barred from working for the organization. The recent announcement comes after the Taliban authorities barred Afghan women from working for the UN in the country. The organization claims that “the ban is unlawful under international law, including the UN Charter, and for that reason, the body cannot comply”.

Experts say the UN might be affected by political interference at this point.

The Taliban calls the ban “an internal matter, religious and cultural issue". Taliban says that they do not want to create an obstacle for the UN. In a statement, the spokesman of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid, demanded all parties to respect the decision made by the Islamic Emirate. Experts say both sides should show flexibility and cooperate for the sake of the nation to manage the problem.

The UN has in its statement threatened "that any negative consequences of this crisis for the Afghan people will be the responsibility of the de facto rulers”.

However, the Islamic Emirate has replied by saying that those who have imposed restrictions on the financial and banking system of Afghanistan, crippling the economy in the first place should be blamed.

The UN has initiated an operational review period during which consultations and adjustments will be made, May 5th is the expected date to see what would the UN and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan determine on this issue.
