In a shocking first, the United States has arrested and indicted Donald Trump, the front-running Republican presidential candidate and former president.
Trump is charged with falsifying legal records related to legal hush money he paid in a salacious alleged affair.
Polls show that 60% of Americans think the arrest was politically motivated, but many don’t seem to mind, as 60% of Americans also say they approve of the indictment.
It’s considered the weakest of the handful of pending cases resulting from Trump’s time in office, and it pales in comparison to other apparent crimes.
Iran has issued a warrant for Trump’s arrest on murder and terrorism charges related to the killing of Iranian anti-terror hero General Qassem Soleimani.
Domestically, other recent US presidents, such as George W. Bush and Harry Truman, have escaped indictments even when they involve the death and suffering of millions of people.
Richard Nixon got a presidential pardon for crimes committed against the United States. Bill Clinton destroyed Yugoslavia, and his wife Hillary gloated over doing the same for Libya. None of these leaders have ever faced a trial, but some hope the prosecution of Trump will start a new era.
Charges of election interference and political persecution are now certain to dangerously divide the country.
Trump can still run for the presidency even if convicted, and most analysts say a conviction appears unlikely.
However, Democrats appear to be betting that the disgrace of being the first indicted president ever will be enough to tip the scales in what will likely be a tightly-contested vote in 2024.
