The Islamic revolution might not have achieved victory in the name of the nation if it had not managed to attract the support of the modern educated middle classes.

The Islamists’ recruitment of middle-class intellectuals, managers, technocrats, industrial workers and most crucially women enabled them to broaden the appeal of their agitation against Pahlavi Westernization that eventually led to the victory of the revolution in 1979. And subsequently in a landmark two-day referendum held on March 30-31, 1979, more than 98.2 percent of eligible Iranians voted “yes” to the establishment of an Islamic Republic in the country. To take a closer look at this turning point in the modern history of Iran, stay with us on this edition of Iran Today.
