Iran has condemned a bomb attack at a cultural center during an event for journalists in Afghanistan's northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani said on Saturday the perpetrators of such brutal attacks are against stability, security and calm of the people of Afghanistan. They seek to disrupt access to information, enlightenment and peaceful coexistence among the Afghan people, he said.
The Iranian official expressed sympathy with the bereaved.
At least one security guard was killed and eight people, including five journalists and three children, were injured in the attack in Balkh province on Saturday. It was not immediately clear who was behind the explosion.
US forces occupied Afghanistan for about two decades under the pretext of fighting the Taliban. But when the forces chaotically left the country, the Taliban stormed Kabul, which had been weakened by prolonged occupation. With the Taliban in power, calls were intensifying for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan. The Taliban has largely failed to bring security since taking over in August 2021 as deadly explosions targeting civilians remain a recurrent theme of daily life in the country.
