Farming is a fundamental part of Palestinian identity and history, which is deeply rooted in the culture of land and the struggle for freedom. After decades of Israeli occupation, organic farming has been weakened significantly. Now, Palestinian farmers in the besieged Gaza Strip are finding new ways to revive the economy and maintain their heritage through innovative and sustainable farming methods.
We have spoken to Aed Abu Ramadan who is one of the pioneers of vertical farming.
Abu Ramadan is optimistic about the success of the project. He emphasizes the need of vertical farming as a means for Palestinian farmers to resist Israeli violations.
Palestinian farming is being suffocated under the Israeli occupation, with its two basic resources of land and water, illegally controlled. The Israeli violations have increased unemployment and poverty rates in Palestine, and exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation.
Israeli occupation is not simply limited to harming civilian population, and damaging buildings and infrastructure. It is fundamentally aimed at destroying Palestinian land and environment in order to put pressure on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and cut their links to their motherland.
