Taking matters into his own hands, in this week’s cabinet meeting, the president personally followed up on the curious case of “serial poisonings” at girls’ schools. He has demanded a thorough investigation, with reports being sent back to his office. And the interior minister is now directly involved, as well.
It all started here, a girls’ vocational school in Qom. But while investigations were still underway, the same incident occurred in more girls’ schools in Qom.
Schools opened a week later, but once again schoolgirls were hospitalized due to a similar incident and the governor this time found himself on the hot seat with anxious parents demanding answers.
And then came reports from more schools, this time in other provinces across the country including Lorestan, Kermanshah and Alborz. The parliament stepped in, calling in the ministers of education, health and intelligence to explain.
At this point, it is quite obvious that the main target is women’s education in general. But in a country where women make up more than 60 percent of university students and nearly 30 percent of faculty members and the society in general takes pride in the advancements of its female population, this is clearly not going to end well for the perpetrators, and particularly the masterminds of these poisonings.
