Heads of NGOs in Syria have gathered to loudly voice an urgent need for help. In Damascus, more than 550 NGOs read out a statement before media outlets calling on the US to lift its unilateral economic sanctions on Syria, explaining the years-long siege deprived Syria from its basic needs and equipment needed to rescue those affected by the deadly earthquake.
Speakers say the recent ease of US sanctions on Syria to help humanitarian aid reach the country is not effective. That’s because banks, companies and governments around the world are still reluctant to engage with Syria as they might face legal obstacles in the future. Western states claim that food and medicine is not included in their list of sanctions, but the reality is vastly different.
Here, rescue workers are in a battle against time. The death toll keeps rising and those who could get away from the earthquake are now struggling to survive with a lack of food and shelter.
Syrians say it’s about time the US and its Western allies ended the economic siege that has caused enormous pain and suffering for innocent citizens. They ask for a fair and just world where humanity comes first before all political agendas.
