French authorities say several people have been wounded by a man wielding a knife at a busy train station in the capital, Paris.

French police said the man was arrested at Gare due Nord train station after they opened fire and wounded him on Wednesday.

Commenting on the attack, the French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said in a tweet that the attacker was “neutralized” by police and thanked them for effective response.

The French authorities have not yet explained the motive of the attacker.

According to France Bleu radio, the attack took place around 6:40 a.m. local time (0540 GMT) inside the train station.

The incident has caused major delays to morning-shift trains at the station.

The station is one of the busiest in Europe and a major link between Paris, London and the north of Europe.

France remains on a state of heightened security alert after a spate of deadly attacks claimed by Takfiri terrorists since 2015.
