Convicts executed for killing member of Iran’s Basij volunteer force

Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini were the two men who were executed in the early hours of Saturday, days after the country’s Supreme Court confirmed their sentences.

They were both convicted of killing Ruhollah Ajamian, an unarmed member of the Basij volunteer force, on November 3, when protests in the city of Karaj near the capital Tehran, turned into violent riots. They elaborately explained how it all happened at court.

Videos circulating on social media that day showed the two men during the act, and also showed a main highway closed off by rioters and Ajamian, wearing a Basij uniform, lying motionless on the ground.

According to the judiciary, 16 people were arrested in connection with the incident.

Protests began in Iran in mid-September after the death of Mahsa Amini who died at a hospital three days after slipping into coma at a police station in Tehran.

The peaceful demonstrations were quickly hijacked by foreign-backed rioters who saw it as an opportunity to destabilize the country. Therefore, incidents such as the gruesome killing of Ruhollah Ajamian should be considered as an act of treason.
