Epic of 9th of Dey

Thousands of Iranians have demonstrated in Tehran, commemorating the 2009 nationwide rallies in support of the Islamic Republic. Thirteen years ago on this day, millions of people took to the streets across the country. The nation condemned months of deadly riots over allegations of fraud after the presidential election of June that year. The rallies on the 9th of the Persian Calendar month of Dey put an end to the riots.

Israel's new cabinet

Benjamin Netanyahu is now formally back in power in Israel, heading a right-wing cabinet expected to escalate a crackdown on the Palestinians after months of growing violence across the occupied West Bank. Netanyahu was sworn in as prime minister following a vote in parliament that brought in the most right-wing cabinet in the regime’s history. Netanyahu formed his cabinet after signing agreements with ultra-Orthodox and far-right parties. Hundreds of left-wing and centrist activists as well as other protesters gathered in front of parliament to denounce Netanyahu’s inauguration. The cabinet aims to expand West Bank settlements. Netanyahu’s Likud party claims Israelis have an 'exclusive right' to the entire region. Palestinians say the Israeli behavior constitutes a dangerous escalation and will have repercussions for the entire region. The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has warned the new cabinet’s policies could trigger major unrest.

Canada's ice towns

Houses in some towns in Canada’s Ontario have been completely covered in ice following a colossal winter storm that has swept throughout North America in recent days. Homes, cars, and even some piers in Crystal Beach and Fort Erie were swallowed by thick ice. Winds from the storm that hit the area during Christmas weekend kicked up water from the lake, which froze on all surfaces. The storm wreaked havoc across many cities in the region, cutting off electricity to thousands of people. Ontario’s southern region of Niagara was put under a state of emergency as crews struggled with impassable roads and wildly blowing snow. The storm has also hit the state of New York in the United States. Officials say dozens of people have died due to the freezing blizzard.
