Israeli crimes

Official figures show Israel placed over 600 Palestinian children under house arrest in 2022 despite international criticism. The Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs says the Israeli regime even forces some children to stay at houses outside their cities. It says house arrest deprives children of their right to education and creates a constant feeling of anxiety, fear and deprivation. The commission adds that the move also leaves harsh psychological effects on children and their families. Israel has repeatedly come under fire by human rights groups and NGOs for keeping Palestinian children under house arrest. They say this is a violation of international law and agreements.

Tunisia budget protests

In Tunisia, a powerful labor union has threatened to occupy the streets in protest at next year’s austerity budget. The General Labor Union slammed the "tax-collecting government," saying the budget increases the suffering of Tunisians. It further vowed to defend the interests of the people. Lawyers have also threatened to carry out what they call a tax disobedience. According to the budget, the government of President Kais Saeid will raise taxes, reduce subsidies and take out a huge external loan in the upcoming year. Saeid currently faces a direct challenge to his leadership. The opposition says he lost legitimacy after a massive voter boycott of parliamentary elections. Saeid shut down the parliament last year and changed the constitution so that he could rule by decree. He claims the moves would save Tunisia from political paralysis and economic decay.

Russia warning Ukraine

Moscow is calling on Kiev to accept its proposals on ending the war. It says this is for Ukraine’s own good. The Russian foreign minister warned that otherwise the Russian army would decide the matter. Sergei Lavrov added that the cessation of the war is in the hands of Ukraine and its main ally, the US. Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed Moscow’s openness to negotiations and blamed Kiev and its Western backers for a lack of talks. Washington has dismissed the stance as posturing. Moscow says it launched the war in Ukraine to de-militarize and de-Nazify its neighbor. But Kiev and its Western allies call it a war of aggression to grab land. Ukraine has ruled out conceding any land to Russia in return for peace and publicly demands Russia relinquish all territory that it has seized.
