UK’s destructive role
Iran has once again condemned European and Western countries for their support for the recent riots in the country. Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kan’ani, said Tehran won’t forget the destructive role played by some governments in inciting those riots. He told a weekly presser that now Western delegations acknowledge their countries’ miscalculations while they are meeting with Iranian officials. Kan’ani noted that those countries often claim they’re not after regime change in Iran, but the fact on the ground shows they have not been able to achieve such a goal. While responding to the recent arrest of members of a UK-linked network, he said some countries intentionally incited rioting and extremism in Iran.
China strike drills
Taiwan accuses China of breaching its air defense identification zones in the past 24 hours. Taipei says China deployed 71 warplanes in military exercises around the self-ruled island on Sunday. Officials are describing the drills as one of the largest Chinese air force incursions ever. Beijing says the strike drills are a response to what it called provocations by Taiwan and the United States. The military is stressing that it would take all necessary measures to defend China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and is opposed to its military ties with the US. The island, however, has been expanding cooperation with Washington. It has also recently authorized up to 10 billion dollars in security assistance for Taiwan.
Korea peninsula tensions
South Korea says several drones from the north violated its airspace, in a new escalation between the two sides. Seoul says it responded by scrambling fighters and military choppers and firing warning shots. Flights were also temporarily suspended at civilian airports near the capital. South Korea says it is not clear whether the aircraft were armed. This is the first time North Korean drones enter the south’s airspace in five years. Pyongyang has also tested a record blitz of missiles in response to US military presence in the region and the hawkish security strategy by the new South Korean government.
