US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said that former US President Donald Trump’s political power is “diminished” and others should take his place in the 2024 Senate races.

The GOP leadership pinned the “complete disappointment" for the Republican Party's lackluster performance in the midterm elections, and subsequent loss of both chambers in Congress, on Trump.

“Here’s what I think has changed: I think the former president’s political clout has diminished,” McConnell said in an exclusive interview with NBC News released on Friday.

Meanwhile, Trump last month formally entered the 2024 race for the White House, his third serious presidential bid.

So far, he is the only prominent Republican to enter the race to challenge the incumbent Joe Biden.

However, his bid has been rejected by most members of the GOP.

In the interview with NBC McConnell vowed to find “quality” candidates for Senate races in 2024.

In the meantime, a number of GOP officials and members of the former Trump administration have voiced readiness to take part in the 2024 US presidential race.

Among the more prominent Republican volunteers include former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who have acknowledged they may mount a challenge.
