In a World Cup that has been full of shocks, Japan have qualified for the last 16 as Group E winners after stunning Spain 2-1.

La Roja were cruising at the break after Alvaro Morata headed home a cross from close range. But Japan turned the game, and the whole of Group E, on its head early into the restart.

First, Ritsu Doan equalized with a fierce shot from the edge of the area. And only seconds later, Ao Tanaka bundled home from close range. The goal was initially ruled out by the assistant referee who signalled the ball had gone out of play, but the VAR ruled in favor of Japan.

The Samurai Blue's reward for the remarkable performance is a tie with Croatia in the last 16 on Monday, while a relieved Spain side will face Morocco a day later.
