At a headquarters not far from the frontline, on the outskirts of Donetsk, these Russian soldiers are on rotation, about to head to the front to replace their comrades.
On the way, it’s tense. Russian forces are making a major attempt to overrun Ukrainian positions that have been largely static for eight years. The soldier thinks he hears a drone. Both sides are dropping grenades on each other.
We run across open ground. The Ukrainian lines are only a hundred meters away.
Our position is hit by a rocket propelled grenade and we are hurried underground.
Europeans are once again slaughtering each other in a brutal trench warfare.
As tension grows between the Western and Eastern worlds, these soldiers aren’t the only ones worried that the next world war may well be already underway in this wintery greyzone wasteland in Donbass.
