One person has been killed and at least 16 others have been injured after a vehicle crashed into an Apple store in Hingham, Massachusetts on Monday.
“Approximately at 10:45 this morning (15:45 GMT) there was a 911 call, actually numerous 911 calls, to Derby Street Shops and the Hingham Police and Fire responded and came upon a scene here at the Apple store located here at Derby Street. Upon their arrival there were people with numerous injuries inside the store. Sixteen people have been transported to hospitals, 14 to South Shore hospitals, two to Boston hospitals. There’s been one fatality,” Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said.
Police have opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
Cruz said during a news conference that a dark colored SUV went through the storefront's plate glass window and struck multiple people. According to Cruz, the driver is in police custody.
"A dark colored SUV appears went through, at a rate of speed undetermined, through a plate of glass, plate glass window, and struck multiple people and as a result of that multiple people are being, as I've said, they've been hospitalized and receiving treatment," he added.
Images from the crash site showed police tents set up outside the store where an SUV smashed through the glass. Paramedics were at the scene to treat the injured.
About 16 shoppers have received hospital treatment.
Authorities have not confirmed how many people were in the store at the time of the crash, but local media reports that several people were trapped inside.
The motive for the crash has not yet been determined.
